How can I change the text size in an eBook?

Your options for changing the text size in an eBook will depend on the collection it is from, and whether you are reading it online or if you have downloaded it to your computer. Please see the instructions below. The name of the collection the eBook is from should be displayed at the top of the page when you first access it.

In addition to the specific instructions below, you may also be able to make text on your screen appear larger using inbuilt features of your operating system.

Collection: The Academic Library

Read online:

Inbuilt zoom options: You can choose a zoom level between 70% and 400% by clicking on the drop down box in the top right hand corner. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level). 

Browser settings: You can also change the zoom level of the eBook platform using your browser (this does not zoom the eBook content). To zoom in, press Ctrl (Windows) or command (Mac) and the + key. To zoom out, press Ctrl/command and the - key, and press Ctrl/command and to set the zoom level back to default. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level).

It is not possible to download eBooks from The Academic Library.

Collection: ACLS Humanities

Read online:

You can choose whether you want to view ACLS Humanities eBooks as an image, text, or PDF (option to download an extract). 

If you choose image, there is an inbuilt zoom option which you can use to select from one of the following zoom levels: 50%, 75%, 100%, 125%, 150%, 175%, 200%, 300%, 400%. Text does not reflow when the zoom level is changed.

If you choose text, there is no inbuilt option to change the zoom level. 

Browser settings: You can change the zoom level of the whole web page using your browser. To zoom in, press Ctrl (Windows) or command (Mac) and the + key. To zoom out, press Ctrl/command and the - key, and press Ctrl/command and to set the zoom level back to default. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level). 

Download: 

If you choose to read an eBook as a PDF (by clicking on Download 10-page PDF excerpt), the download will open in your web browser, which does not give access to the Adobe Reader settings you need to use to alter the zoom level. First, use the Save or Download icon to save the eBook to your computer, and then open it from there with Adobe Reader. Then you can change the page zoom through the full range of zoom levels from 10% - 6400%. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level). 

Collection: Berg Fashion Library

Read online:

Inbuilt zoom options: You can change the text size by clicking on the little symbols on the top toolbar. There are 3 zoom levels available. 

Browser settings: You can also change the zoom level of the whole web page using your browser. To zoom in, press Ctrl (Windows) or command (Mac) and the + key. To zoom out, press Ctrl/command and the - key, and press Ctrl/command and to set the zoom level back to default. When you zoom the text reflows (automatically adjusts to fit on the page at the new zoom level).

Collection: CAB eBooks

Read online:

CAB eBooks are only available in downloadable PDF format, with the option to download either the entire book or individual chapters.

Collection: Cambridge Core

Read online:

Some Cambridge Core eBooks are available to read online, depending on the book title. For those that are:

Inbuilt zoom options: You can choose between two different zoom levels by clicking the little Aa buttons in the top right hand corner. 

Browser settings:  You can also change the zoom level ousing your browser.  To zoom in, press  Ctrl  (Windows) or  command  (Mac) and the  +  key.  To zoom out, press  Ctrl / command  and the  -  key, and press  Ctrl / command  and  to set the zoom level back to default.  When you zoom the text reflows (automatically adjusts to fit on the page at the new zoom level).  

Download: 

If you download a book as PDF, the download will open in your web browser, which does not give access to the Adobe Reader settings you need to use to alter the zoom level. First, use the Save or Download icon to save the eBook to your computer, and then open it from there with Adobe Reader. Then you can change the page zoom from 10% - 6400% using the little plus and minus symbols. With most titles you can make the text reflow (automatically adjust itself to fit on the page at the new zoom level) by following these reflow instructions. Unfortunately with some titles you may find that the Reflow setting doesn't work, as the spaces between words are lost when it is activated.

Collection: Dawsonera 

­eBooks are available in two different formats, depending on the title of the eBook: PDF (option to read online or download) and EPUB3 (option to read online or download). The majority of Dawsonera eBooks are PDFs. You can filter by the different formats using the menu on the left hand side.

Read online:

Online PDF and online EPUB: You can increase and decrease the text size by two levels each way, using the little plus and minus symbols in the top left hand corner. Text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level) when these are used. 

Browser settings: You can also change the zoom level of the whole web page using your browser. To zoom in, press Ctrl (Windows) or command (Mac) and the + key. To zoom out, press Ctrl/command and the - key, and press Ctrl/command and to set the zoom level back to default. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level). 

PDF/EPUB download - these download as a .ACSM file and must be opened in either Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader.

PDF download in Adobe Digital Editions:

There are 6 different zoom levels available. You can access these under the Reading menu > PDF view > Zoom In / Zoom Out. You can also use the keyboard shortcuts CTRL + + and CTRL + - to zoom in and out. When the zoom level is changed text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level). 

PDF download in Bluefire Reader:

There are over 45 different zoom levels available. When the zoom level is changed text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level). 

EPUB download in Adobe Digital Editions: To change the zoom level, click on the AA button in the top right hand corner. Alternatively you can click on the Reading button and then click on EPUB Text size, or use the keyboard shortcuts CTRL + + and CTRL + - to zoom in and out. All options allow you to choose from a range of 5 zoom levels: Small, Medium, Large, Extra large, and Ultra large. When you zoom the text reflows (automatically adjusts to fit on the page at the new zoom level).  

EPUB download in Bluefire Reader:

You can change the zoom level by going to View ePUB Settings and then use the plus and minus symbols next to where it says Text Size. There are 29 available zoom levels. When you change the zoom level, the text reflows (automatically adjusts to fit on the page at the new zoom level).

Collection: Drama Online

Read online:

Browser settings: There is no inbuilt zoom option. You can change the zoom level of the whole web page using your browser. To zoom in, press Ctrl (Windows) or command (Mac) and the + key. To zoom out, press Ctrl/command and the - key, and press Ctrl/command and to set the zoom level back to default. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level).

It is not possible to download eBooks from Drama Online.

Collection: Ebook Central (from Proquest)

If you decide to read the eBook online, it will be displayed in online PDF format. If you decide to download the entire eBook, you can choose whether to download it as EPUB or PDF. These book downloads will be in .acsm file format. If you decide to download an individual chapter from the eBook, this will download as a PDF (.pdf) file, and will have more accessibility options available to you than if you downloaded the entire book.

If ‘Accessibility Mode’ is activated, eBooks are also available to read online in HTML format. If you would like ‘Accessibility Mode’ to be activated for your Ebook Central account, please email library@leedsbeckett.ac.uk to request this. The following information applies to the Ebook Central platform without ‘Accessibility Mode’ activated.

There is an inbuilt zoom tool which offers 4 zoom levels - click the magnifying glass symbols on the top toolbar. When the zoom level is changed, the page takes a long time to respond. The text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level) when the text size is changed.

Full book download - PDF (opened in Adobe Digital Editions)

There are 6 different zoom levels available. You can change the level by clicking on Reading on the top toolbar, then PDF View and clicking on Zoom In or Zoom Out. You can also zoom in by pressing the CTRL and + keys, and zoom out by pressing the CTRL and - keys. The text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level) when the text size is changed.

Full book download - PDF (opened in Bluefire Reader)

There are over 40 different zoom levels available. You can change the level by clicking the plus and minus symbols on the toolbar at the bottom. You can also choose from a limited range of zoom levels by clicking on View and then PDF Settings, then selecting a zoom level from the drop-down menu. The text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level) when the text size is changed.

Full book download - EPUB (opened in Adobe Digital Editions)

There are 5 different zoom levels available. You can change the level by clicking on the AA button on the toolbar in the top right hand corner, and selecting the size you require. You can also change the zoom level by clicking on Reading on the top toolbar, then EPUB Text Size and clicking on Increase or Decrease. You can also zoom in by pressing the CTRL and + keys, and zoom out by pressing the CTRL and - keys. There are 7 zoom levels available. You can change the zoom level using CTRL + + and CTRL + -. When you change the zoom level, the text automatically reflows (adjusts to fit on the page at the new zoom level).

Bluefire Reader

You can change the zoom level under View > ePUB settings. Here you can choose from 33 different zoom levels. When you change the zoom level, the text automatically reflows (adjusts to fit on the page at the new zoom level).

Collection: ICE Virtual Library

Collection: SAGE

Read online:

You may get a message at the top of the page reads This file claims compliance with the PDF/A standard and has been opened read-only to prevent modification. If you get this message, click Enable Editing and click OK. Then you can change the page zoom from 10% - 6400% using the little plus and minus symbols. Depending on the title of the eBook, you may be able to make the text reflow (automatically adjust itself to fit on the page at the new zoom level) by following these reflow instructions.
