Why are my prints in black and white when I’m using the colour printer?

All university PCs default to black and white. This is to make sure you don’t accidentally pay for colour printing when you only needed black and white. You can change your document settings to print in colour if you wish to by following the instructions below.

Microsoft Office

These instructions are the same for all Microsoft Office applications.

  1. Click on ‘File’ on the toolbar and then click on ‘Print’.
  2. Click on the ‘Printer Properties’ hyperlink which you can find underneath the printer name.
  3. Click on the 'Colour' tab in the properties window.
  4. Untick ‘Print in Grayscale’ and click ‘OK’.
  5. Click the ‘Print’ button and your document will be waiting for you at any University printer.
    • Remember you still need to print from a colour printer.

PDF Document - Edge

All University PCs open PDFs in Edge by default.

  1. Click on the Print’ icon (printer symbol) on the toolbar.
    • If the toolbar isn’t displayed, right click on the document and click on ‘Show or hide toolbar.
  2. Please make sure the printer is set to ‘SafecomPullPrinter’.
    • You can click on the triangle next to the printer name to change which printer you are using.  If ‘SafecomPullPrinter’ isn’t available on the list please speak to a member of the Library Advice Team.
  3. Change the ‘Colour mode’ drop down menu to ‘Colour’.
  4. Click the ‘Print’ button and your document will be waiting for you at any University printer.
    • Remember you still need to print from a colour printer.

PDF Document – Chrome

If Google Chrome is your preferred browser see below for instructions on printing in colour

  1. Hold the mouse at the top of the PDF to show the drop down menu and click on the Print’ icon (printer symbol) 
  2. Make sure the 'destination' is set to 'SafecomPullPrinter'
  3. If ‘SafecomPullPrinter’ isn’t available on the list please speak to a member of the Library Advice Team
  4. The 'colour' option always defaults to black and white but you can select 'colour' by clicking the drop down menu option
  5. Click the ‘Print’ button and your document will be waiting for you at any University printer.
  6. Remember you still need to print from a colour printer.

PDF Document – Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Acrobat reader is more advanced software for reading PDFs.

  1. Click on the ‘Print File’ icon (printer symbol) on the toolbar.
  2. Please make sure the printer is set to ‘SafecomPullPrinter’.
  3. You can click on the triangle next to the printer name to change which printer you are using.  If ‘SafecomPullPrinter’ isn’t available on the list please speak to a member of the Library Advice Team.
  4. Click on the ‘Properties’ button next to the printer name.
  5. Click on the 'Colour' tab in the properties window.

Other software and applications

Whilst we do not have specific instructions for other software or applications they should generally follow a similar process to Microsoft Office applications. If you are having problems printing in colour, please speak to a member of the Library Advice team.
