What accessibility features are available for Dawsonera eBooks?

You may find the Dawsonera accessibility statement helpful.

eBooks are available in two different formats, depending on the title of the eBook: PDF (option to read online or download) and EPUB3 (option to read online or download). The majority of Dawsonera eBooks are PDFs. You can filter by the different formats using the menu on the left hand side.

The accessibility options available will depend on whether you are reading the eBook online or if you have downloaded it to your computer.

Texthelp Read & Write software or ClaroRead software (both of which are installed on all Library PCs) provide accessibility tools (see the Library website Software page for more information). 

How can I have an eBook read aloud to me?

How can I change the font colour in an eBook?

In addition to the specific instructions below, you may also be able to change font colours using your web browser or operating system settings.

There is no inbuilt option to change the font colour. You may be able to change font colours using your web browser or operating system settings.

If you go to View > PDF Settings and then tick the box next to Night Mode, this makes the book display as white text on a black background. There is no option to choose a custom font colour.

You can choose between black and white font colour by going to View > ePUB Settings and ticking the box next to Advanced Settings. Then select your preferred theme from the list of themes. You can also change the font style by selecting from the Font Face menu.

How can I change the text size in an eBook?

In addition to the specific instructions below, you may also be able to make text on your screen appear larger using inbuilt features of your operating system.

Read online:

Inbuild zoom options:

You can increase and decrease the text size by two levels each way, using the little plus and minus symbols in the top left hand corner. Text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level) when these are used.

Browser settings:

You can also change the zoom level of the whole web page using your browser. To zoom in, press Ctrl (Windows) or command (Mac) and the + key. To zoom out, press Ctrl/command and the - key, and press Ctrl/command and 0 to set the zoom level back to default. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level).

There are 6 different zoom levels available. You can access these under the Reading menu > PDF view > Zoom In / Zoom Out. You can also use the keyboard shortcuts CTRL + + and CTRL + - to zoom in and out. When the zoom level is changed text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level).

PDF download in Bluefire Reader:

There are over 45 different zoom levels available. When the zoom level is changed text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level).

EPUB download in Adobe Digital Editions:

To change the zoom level, click on the AA button in the top right hand corner. Alternatively you can click on the Reading button and then click on EPUB Text size, or use the keyboard shortcuts CTRL + + and CTRL + - to zoom in and out. All options allow you to choose from a range of 5 zoom levels: Small, Medium, Large, Extra large, and Ultra large. When you zoom the text reflows (automatically adjusts to fit on the page at the new zoom level). 

EPUB download in Bluefire Reader:

You can change the zoom level by going to View > ePUB Settings and then use the plus and minus symbols next to where it says Text Size. There are 29 available zoom levels. When you change the zoom level, the text reflows (automatically adjusts to fit on the page at the new zoom level).
