Should I choose Green or Gold Open Access (OA)?

Leeds Beckett has an Open Research Policy that encourages researchers to follow the principle 'as open as possible, as early as possible'. If your research has been funded by an external organisation, you will need to ensure you comply with your funder's conditions for open access publication.

The Green model allows you to comply with the REF 2021 Open Access policy and has the benefit of no upfront fees being paid by the researcher or the institution.

The Gold model requires a fee in the form of an Article Processing Charge (APC) to be paid before publication. We have some new agreements with publishers which cover the cost of an APC meaning you do not have to pay it directly. Details of these publishers and further information on APC discounts are available on our APC webpage. The APC can be a large amount of money, so your Director of Research and potentially the Research Services team must authorise any payment involved before submission to the journal.
