How do I open British Standards PDF documents?

There are different ways to view documents from British Standards Online (BSOL). Although documents can be accessed in different ways, the content remains the same.

To read documents online click on the Quick View PDF icon. Please note, these may be preview versions of documents.

If you want to download BSOL PDF documents, you need to have the FileOpen plugin installed.

This can only be downloaded onto personal devices. You can download FileOpen here.

Once you have the FileOpen plugin installed when you find the Standard you want to read follow these steps:

  1. Click on Download PDF.
  2. Find the downloaded file in your devices Downloads folder.
  3. On the file, right click, select Open With and select Adobe Acrobat Reader.

PCs in the Library now have FileOpen installed. To download documents whilst on campus, please follow the following instructions:

  1. In the British Standards database, choose Download PDF for the document you want.
  2. Open Adobe Acrobat (you might need to search for it).
  3. You will be asked to Sign in so enter your university email address and click Continue. Select that it is a Company or School Account. When asked Do you want to make Adobe Acrobat your default PDF application? select Yes, choose Adobe Acrobat and then click on Set default.
  4. Close down Adobe (you need to do this to enable the changes).
  5. Find your downloaded British Standard document and right click on it. Choose Open with system viewer. This will now open up the full PDF in Adobe Reader.
