Turnitin Error - Invalid or Missing State
This known issue prevents users from opening Turnitin assignment inbox links due to an error message 'Invalid or missing state.'
PLEASE NOTE ON CAMPUS PC'S DO NOT SEEM TO BE AFFECTED.
General workarounds:
- Update your browser
- If using Safari or Firefox, try accessing the Turnitin assignment via Chrome or Microsoft Edge in the first instance
- Clear your browser Cache & Cookies
- Mac OS / iPhone and iPad users are mostly affected - quick workaround is to use Google Chrome browser
- If you are using a mobile device, try using a pc or laptop available in the library on campus or other another device
Another potential cause of this issue seems to be when 3rd party cookies and/or JavaScript are blocked. This can be resolved by editing your browser's enabled Privacy & Security preferences so that it will not block any background scripts that Turnitin is trying to load. In your browser window (e.g. Safari, Firefox, Chrome, etc), please follow the steps for your browser (see below) to ensure that your preferred browser reflects the correct preferences:
Google Chrome (our recommended browser),
- Select Settings (you can open the Settings page by clicking the icon with three stacked horizontal lines in your browser's menu bar): Privacy & Security > Site Settings > Content > JavaScript > Please ensure that the option Sites can use JavaScript (recommended) is enabled.
- Close your active browser and re-open a new browsing session so that any changes can take effect.
Safari
- Select Safari > Preferences > Security > Web content > Enable JavaScript In Firefox, select File > Preferences > Privacy & Security.
- If Strict is enabled, change this to Standard.
- We have also seen benefit of turning off 'Prevent cross-site tracking' which can be found the Safari settings under Privacy.
Microsoft Edge
- Select Microsoft Edge > Preferences > Cookies and Site permissions > JavaScript > Allowed (recommended).
- alternatively, if you would rather select 'Don't allow sites to use JavaScript and or 3rd party Cookies', please add these two addresses to the sites that are Allowed to use JavaScript / 3rd Party Cookies:
- api.turnitin.com
- api.turnitinuk.com
- Close your active browser and re-open a new browsing session so that any changes can take effect.
