How do I move my Google content (files/photos) to a personal Google account?

Google Takeout

You can use Google Takeout to extract data from your University Google Drive, ready to import into a personal Google Drive:

  1. Open Google Takeout.
  2. Select data to include. For files and photos, tick the checkboxes for Drive and Google Photos.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Next step.
  4. Choose file type, frequency and destination.
    • Transfer to: Select the location where you would like to transfer the data. If you select email, you will only have one week to download your files. Instead, you can select another personal storage location like Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box.
    • Frequency: Select Export once.
    • File type: If unsure, select .zip as this file type is better supported on Windows.
    • File size: This means that Google will split your data into multiple files, making it easier to download. If in doubt, leave this as 2GB.
  5. Click Create export.
  6. Depending on the amount of data, the export may take a few days.
  7. You will receive an email to your University account when the process has finished.
  8. You can then upload the data into your personal Google account.
