What accessibility features are available for Kortext eBooks?
Various software and tools can be used to enhance the accessibility of eBooks. The options will depend on the eBook format, whether you are reading it online or downloading it, features you would like to use and personal preference. Our recommendations are below, along with alternatives under 'More accessibility options'.

Kortext also offers an app for MacOS, iOS (iPhone), Android and Windows. Follow these instructions: How do I download Kortext eBook reader? The app allows you to change font size, font and background colour and to use the Read Aloud tool. A video tutorial is available on the Kortext website on how to use the Kortext Mobile Apps Reader.
Read aloud:
Online format:
Highlight the text you want to have read aloud and press the Read Aloud option from the menu that appears. Whilst having text read aloud a toolbar will appear on screen which allows you to stop the reading or to change the voice settings.
Kortext Reader app:
Highlight the text you want to have read aloud and press the Read Aloud option from the menu that appears. Alternatively, if you want to read the whole page, click the menu button (3 vertical dots) and choose Read Aloud (on Android and Windows) or Voiceover (for Mac and iPhone). Whilst having text read aloud a toolbar will appear on screen which allows you to stop the reading or to change the voice settings.
Change background colour:
Online format:
For titles in EPUB format click on the Display Options button in the top right. From there you can choose a range of colours.
For titles in PDF format there is no inbuilt option to change the background colour. You may be able to change font colours using your web browser or operating system settings.
Kortext Reader app:
Click on the Display Options button . From there you can choose from the colour Tones: black text on a white background, white text on a black background or sepia.
Read online - EPUB:
Change text size:
Online format:
For titles in EPUB format click on the Display Options button in the top right and use the Text Size buttons. When you change the text size the text reflows (automatically adjusts to fit on the page at the new zoom level).
For titles in PDF format click on the Display Options button in the top right and use the zoom in and out buttons. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level)
Kortext Reader app:
Click on the Display Options button . Change the Text Size using the plus and minus buttons.
For titles in EPUB format the text reflows (automatically adjust itself to fit on the screen at the new zoom level).
For titles available in PDF format the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the screen at the new zoom level).
On an iPhone you can increase the text size by using the standard pinch to zoom method (place two fingers on the screen and spread them out to zoom in or pinch them together to zoom out).
More accessibility options:
Zooming:
- You can change the zoom level of a whole web page using your browser. To zoom in, press Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) and the + key. To zoom out, press Ctrl/command and the - key. Press Ctrl/command and 0 to set the zoom level back to default.
- You may be able to make text on your screen appear larger using inbuilt features of your operating system.
- Microsoft Edge can be used to change the zoom level of PDFs but the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level).
Colours:
- You may also be able to change colours using your web browser or operating system settings.

Software and tools:
- Texthelp Read & Write software (which is installed on all Library PCs) provides accessibility tools.
- There is also a browser toolbar Read & Write for Google Chrome (also works in Microsoft Edge) which offers many of the functions of the full software.
