What accessibility features are available for digitised chapters using Kortext?
.
Various software and tools can be used to enhance the accessibility of digitised chapters. The options will depend on whether you are reading it online or downloading it, features you would like to use and personal preference. Our recommendations are below, along with alternatives under 'More accessibility options'.
Accessibility information from the provider:
You may find the Kortext accessibility statement helpful.
The digitised chapters can be read online or downloaded. Kortext also offers an app for MacOS, iOS (iPhone), Android and Windows. Follow these instructions: How do I download Kortext eBook reader app? The app allows you to change font size, font and background colour and to use the Read Aloud tool. Video tutorials are available on how to use the Mobile Apps Reader on the Kortext Support page.
Read aloud:
Online format:
We recommend following these instructions for using the Microsoft Edge browser Read Aloud tool. If that does not work, you can use Read&Write software to have unselectable text read aloud.
Download:
We recommend opening the PDF in Edge and using the Edge Read Aloud tool.
If Edge doesn't read the file, this may be because it is an image PDF (i.e. a picture of text). You can try converting it into an accessible PDF first using SensusAccess (subject to the copyright restrictions detailed on the SensusAccess page).
Kortext Reader app:
Highlight the text you want to have read aloud and press the Read Aloud option from the menu that appears. Alternatively, if you want to read the whole page, click the menu button (3 vertical dots) and choose Read Aloud (on Android and Windows) or Voiceover (for Mac and iPhone). Whilst having text read aloud a toolbar will appear on screen which allows you to stop the reading or to change the voice settings.
Change background colour:
Online format:
There is no inbuilt option to change the background colour. You may be able to change background colours using your web browser or operating system settings.
Kortext Reader app:
You will need to download the digitised chapter first. Locate the PDF file and choose to open it with the Kortext app. Click on the Display Options button . From there you can choose from the colour tones: black text on a white background, white text on a black background or sepia.
Change text size:
Online format:
You can choose between different zoom levels by clicking the zoom in and out buttons in the top right hand corner. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the screen at the new zoom level).
Kortext Reader app:
You will need to download the digitised chapter first. Locate the PDF file and choose to open it with the Kortext app. Click on the Display Options button . Change the Text Size using the plus and minus buttons. When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the screen at the new zoom level).
On an iPhone you can increase the text size by using the standard pinch to zoom method (place two fingers on the screen and spread them out to zoom in or pinch them together to zoom out). When you zoom the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the screen at the new zoom level).
More accessibility options:
Zooming:
- You can change the zoom level of a whole web page using your browser. To zoom in, press Ctrl (Windows) or command (Mac) and the + key. To zoom out, press Ctrl/command and the - key. Press Ctrl/command and 0 to set the zoom level back to default.
- You may be able to make text on your screen appear larger using inbuilt features of your operating system.
- Microsoft Edge can be used to change the zoom level of PDFs but the text does not reflow (automatically adjust to fit on the page at the new zoom level).
Colours:
- You may also be able to change colours using your web browser or operating system settings.
- For additional accessibility options for PDFs e.g. changing font colour, see: Accessibility tools within Adobe Reader
Software and tools:
- Texthelp Read & Write software (which is installed on all Library PCs) provides accessibility tools
- There is also a browser toolbar Read & Write for Google Chrome (also works in Microsoft Edge) which offers many of the functions of the full software
- See the Assistive Software page for more information about Read & Write and other tools
