What is Inspera and how do I use it?

About Inspera

Inspera is an assessment tool used for digital exams in Law and Nursing courses at Leeds Beckett University. You may also hear it referred to as a lockdown browser, safe exam browser, or exam portal.

Inspera is designed to increase the security of digital exams.

You will use Inspera to sit exams within strict, managed limits. For example, you will only be able to open specific web addresses (URLs) and PDFs that have been allowed within the test settings.

Inspera also prevent you from copying and pasting text, taking screenshots or using messaging apps or tools on your computer while you are taking a test.

How do I use Inspera?

For on campus exams

If your course team have told you that you will be taking your Inspera exam on campus (e.g. in a PC classroom), they will provide you with information about the location of your exam. The software will already be installed on the classroom PC that you have been allocated.

Open Inspera and log in to see the tests that are available to you on your exam day.

For off campus exams

If your course team have told you that you will be taking your Inspera exam off campus (e.g. at home), they will provide you with information about installing Inspera Integrity Browser (IIIB) (previously known as Inspera Exam Portal).

You will need:

  • Windows 10 or Mac OS Big Sur version 11 or higher - it will not run on Chromebooks or iPads.
  • Administrator rights on your device (if you own the device it’s likely you will have this, it is usually only an issue if the device is owned by an employer)
  • A web cam and microphone (these can be internal or external)

To install the Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB) - latest version is 1.16.3 (previously Inspera Exam Portal)

  1. Click the Inspera link that your course team have provided  (or copy and paste this into your web browser).
  2. The install file will start to download automatically, it will be saved in the usual downloads area on your device.
  3. Click on the Inspera Integrity Browser file you have downloaded - the latest version is 1.16.3 (updated 13/08/24).
  4. This will start the install wizard, you will need to click Next and accept the license agreement to work through the installation steps.
  5. If you are prompted for a password during the installation process, this will be the administrator username and password for the device you are using. You will need to ask the device owner, if this is not you.

After you have installed Inspera, you can open it and log in to see the tests that are available to you on your exam day.
