How do I register for MFA?

You will be asked to set-up multi-factor authentication (MFA) the first time you log into a university system. Alternatively, please register for MFA here. Just follow the instructions on screen - you can also see them below or follow our video at the bottom of the FAQ.

We recommend registering for MFA on a laptop or desktop device; trying to set-up MFA using the device you will use to authenticate is very difficult. It is also possible to register using just your mobile device, which you can do by following our FAQ on registering for MFA using your mobile device.

Please note; you will need a mobile device with a connection to the web or a working phone number to complete this process.

Once registered, it may take 24hrs before you are asked to authenticate when logging in. You should still be able to log in during this time.

You will need to set up MFA using the two methods listed below. There are alternative authentication methods available but we recommend using these two methods if you wish to reset your own password or use some specialist services:

  •  Authenticator app – download the app to your smart phone when prompted. We recommend using the Microsoft Authenticator app and setting it as your default authentication method.
  • Phone – add your mobile phone number when prompted.

You will need to know your password and student email address to register for multi-factor authentication.

If you have forgotten your password, please contact the Library for a reset. Once set up, multi-factor authentication allows you to reset your own password and unlock your own account.

You can find your student email address in the Profile tab of MyBeckett

Instructions for setting up MFA

Once you have been prompted to set up MFA, you will follow the below process on your screen:

  1. Sign in using your Leeds Beckett student email

  1. You will be transferred to a single-sign-on screen

  1. Enter your student email and password (the same as you use to log into MyBeckett)

  1. You will be advised that we require additional information to access your account.
  2. You will be asked to download the Microsoft Authenticator app. Once you have downloaded it click ‘Next’, you DO NOT need to sign into the Authenticator app.

If you do not have a smartphone click on “I want to set up a different method”, choose mobile phone and follow Step 8. You will then need to choose an alternative method of authentication, such as personal email, to allow you to reset your password or to unlock your account.

  1. Open the Authenticator app to scan the QR code on screen. If you can’t scan the QR Code click on “Can’t scan image” and follow the on screen instructions to enter a code manually.

Please note- if the QR code scanner does not automatically appear on your mobile device after opening the app, please click on the 3 vertical dots (or plus sign) in the top right hand corner, select 'Add Account' and then 'Work/School Account'. This will then open the QR scanner on your mobile device.

  1. You will be asked to approve a test notification on the Authenticator app. This will then happen every time you are required to authenticate in the future.

  1. Now you can add your mobile phone as a second authentication method

You are now set up! You can view or change your chosen authentication methods if you wish and if you have issues setting up, please contact the Library and IT Advice team.

If you change your phone/number at a later date, please contact the Library and IT Advice Team for an MFA reset. You'll then need to register again for MFA to add your new phone/number.
